This is the place where Jānis Stabulnieks, a share-farmer with his
family resettled, thanks to the regional policy of Government of K. Ulmanis, in
the spring of 1938. It is located in Augšzeme Region, formerly Ilūkste Parish,
now Kaplava Parish of Krāslava District. This is the place which was cleared of
bushes, trees, stumps by the new farmer and where a stable, barn, steam bath
and a dwelling house were built and nine children raised. It is a place which
attracts with its inner force, light, and uniqueness. It is the place where the
members of my family, of both the new and the old generation, live and work.
I know that it is my place. The sense of home prevails, the sense
of place and environment where I belong. I have felt this unmistakable sense of
intimacy and belonging ever since I started to perceive myself as an
individual. I am aware that I need the place, like the place needs me. A lot of
effort needs to be invested in the house to maintain the place, but it is worth
it.
